VOSH(Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity)
The flagship project of the Rotary Club of Grenada East is an eye-care clinic held in conjunction with VOSH, Michigan USA. The primary mission of VOSH/International is to facilitate the provision and the sustainability of vision care worldwide for people who can neither afford nor obtain such care.
The Rotary Club of Grenada East has since partnered with the VOSH International chapter for the past 22 years (with a 3 year hiatus as a result of COVID-19) and has provided eye-care service to over 10,000 Grenadians. The clinics see on average 2000 needy patients in desperate need of optometry services. Patients range from children to the elderly and all services/eye care are free.
The clinics facilitate the dispensation of free eye glasses, topical and prescription solutions as well as making the relevant referrals upon diagnosis of cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy, pterygium, strabismus and other conditions.
Diabetic Foot Care Project
The Rotary Club of Grenada East has partnered with the Rotary Club of Ledbury on a matching grant basis to facilitate a diabetic foot care program. The program is designed to train doctors and nurses in the up to date treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
The program dramatically reduces the number of amputations required resulting in up to 70% savings in the social and health care costs in the island.
How It Works
The Rotary Club of Ledbury facilitates, coordinates, markets and raises the funds required for the program. The RCGE provides the local requirements to include leadership, community & medical links along with clinical support. The foot-care specialists then train local staff, treat patients and record results to ensure sustainability.
Annual Christmas Joy Hamper project
The Rotary Club of Grenada helps the needy and elderly annually at Christmas time with its annual Christmas Joy project. Each member selects three individuals from the community and distributes hampers with food and toiletries to ensure a jolly Christmas season.
This project brings Christmas cheer to an estimated 48 households annually.
